A small tree distributed over much of South America as far south as Uruguay and Argentina. You can find this tree in forests, often at higher elevations. Usually found in moist, rocky soils near streams, usually in the middle of the forest, occasionally along the forest edges It has tiny, white flowers followed by small, glossy purple fruit. The fruits are edible and sweet and can be eaten plain or made into a liqueur. In cultivation it adapts well to warm temperate and tropical climates. It grows 6 - 9 meters tall.
