A shrub up to 3 meters tall, with a semi-woody stem (not hollow like the species of the genus Carica ) that can branch from the base. The bark is gray-green and quite fibrous. The leaves have long petioles (stems) up to 15 cm long, are palmate (hand-shaped with a leaf blade that divides in half), with a membranous texture and crenate margin (with rounded tooth indentations) measuring 4 cm to 6 cm wide by 9 cm to 13 cm long. The flowers are unisexual, that is, male and female flowers on the same plant.
