ARAÇA-DE-TRONCO-CASCUDO comes from the Tupi Guarani words: ARÁ-Fruta + eçá - eyes, referring to the persistent sepals that seem to form eyelashes. It also receives the names: Araçá peroba, Araçá winter and Araçá cascudo. This is a rare species appearing in the cerrados of Campos Dirtos and in more open formations present in the states of Goiás, Federal District, Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Brazil. It is shrub of 1.5 to 4 meters high composed of many branches prostrate towards the ground. The trunk is tortuous, brittle, with brownish-brown bark. The plant appreciates deep red or sandy soils, with a pH of around 5.5 and which drain rainwater quickly. Enjoys altitudes between 300 to 1,000 meters above sea level, not growing well at low altitudes. Likes medium temperatures 22 to 27º C, tolerating frosts down to minus 3º C, withstanding drought periods of up to 6 months. The fruits can be consumed out of hand, despite being a little acidic. The fruits can also be used to make sweets similar to guava paste, jellies, ice cream and refreshing juices. The plant is ornamental and beautiful and can be grown in gardens and parks. Seeds will be shipped in humid vermiculite.
