It is a palm tree with an underground stem that rarely emerges 1 meter from the ground, forming a clump or canopy of up to 2.5 m in diameter. The plant likes sandy or red soils that are acidic ( pH between 4.0 to 5.3) and that drain rainwater well; with natural fertility formed from the decomposition of leaves and grass . It is a plant resistant to droughts and frosts of up to -3 degrees. It can be grown from sea level to 950 m of altitude. Seeds can be eaten raw or toasted and used in many culinary recipes. Seeds are shipped in humid vermiculite.
